Movies Like Men in Black: Investigating Sci-Fi Action Comedy Movies
Men in Black movie has since 1997 Capture the American Youth and generations as a whole due to its combination of Sci-FiComedy and action. Shooting by Barry Sonnenfeld, and starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the movie told the public about a special agency that guards the Earth from space, and although there were many other sci-fi action films at that time, this one dealt a lot of comedy along with its thrilling scenes.
For those who might like Men in Black or any other SCI-FI fast action comedy then there are many more sequels to see. Here are some movies that will give you the Men in Black feel while entertaining unique elements of their own: From governmental organizations controlling relations with aliens to the world being saved by unlikely characters.
1. Ghostbusters (1984)
One true Men in Black predecessor, in my opinion, is Ghostbusters – is the storyline of four enthusiastic scientists who create a ghost capture and removal services company in the Big Apple. Directed by Ivan Reitman, and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, this film hits the right balance between supernatural, and comedy.
Similar to the Men in Black movie, Ghostbusters tells a story of a group of professionals fighting paranormal occurrences, but instead of space travellers the protagonists are fighting ghosts. It is always a pleasure to see a team form, and the comedic aspect of defeating these various supernatural beings is much like Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
Why You’ll Like It:
- A playfully eerie show while exploring the world of the supernatural.
- High levels of character interaction and their humorous communication.
- Renowned introductory themes and catchphrases synonymous with cultures that never seem to age.
2. Must-have movies of the millennium include Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Marvels’ pieces together is a fun rollercoaster ride through space with superheroes who may not look like one. Taken in hand by director James Gunn which is basically a space opera that revolves around the life of Peter Quill (Christ Pratt) and a group of aliens who come together to put the universe right from a menacing menace.
Similar to Men in Black this movie has shades of sci-fi adventure and comedy. The characters are undoubtedly different but the quips and the chemistry between them is very reminiscent of other moments within the action scenes. If you loved the witty conversations between Agent J and Agent K, then you’re going to love the interaction between Quill and his crew.
Why You’ll Like It:
- Crazy and loud extraterrestrial action movie with fun heroes.
- It’s something like a combination of comedy, fights and dramatic scenes.
- A great retro music playing during most of the critical moments of the series.
3. Paul (2011)
As if you are in the market again for another out of this world romantic-comedy, Paul would best suit your palate. Written and directed by Greg Mottola, the production includes such actors as Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Seth Rogen; two rather nerdy British friends rent a car and drive through the American Southwest meeting an alien on the way. Collectively they have to avoid capture by aliens posing as government officials while assisting Paul to get back to his planet.
As much as Men in Black, Paul is riddled with science fiction tropes and creative humor. Paul resembles some of the sarcastic, human like aliens in the Men in Black this time round character created by the two, Pegg and Frost also provides some much needed comedy to the movie from time to time.
Why You’ll Like It:
- Silly road movie with delightful subtle references to the sci-fi genre.
- Good pairing of the heroes, seems like duo cop movies.
- A very funny and rowdy look at the encounters with aliens.
4. The Fifth Element (1997)
The Fifth Element is a bright and realistic extravaganza of the effective utilization of sci-fi in the wide context created by the film and directed by Luc Besson. The movie is taking place in the 23rd century and focuses on a group of a taxi driver from New York (Bruce Willis) and a mysterious woman (Milla Jovovich), while battling in space it is, too a humorous film.
Like the Men in Black, The Fifth Element is set in the future where the world is full of different types of inhabitants – aliens. The film’s tone as well as the characters seen in this part are quite comic-like and the tempo of the whole movie matches to the fans who tasted Men in Black’s great and full of jokes and dynamic action world.
Why You’ll Like It:
- Stylistically vivid and unapologetic when it comes to the design of the world.
- Action-packed of course, with a hint of sci-fi and even comedy, and of course those super-sized character figures.
- Many outstanding scenes featuring a very good cast of Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman.
5. Evolution (2001)
Evolution Also directed by Ivan Reitman of ‘Ghostbusters’ mischievous fame, Evolution is science fiction comedy where a team of scientists find a strange organism form space which starts to evolve at an incredible rate. The movie stars David Duchovny, Orlando Jones Julianne Moore and similar to the Men in Black the movie combines comedy with its Sci-Fi premise.
Despite its shortcomings it can be stated that Evolution is a fun ride if compared to Men in Black, yet it is still good sci-fi comedy. The comedy in the film is on the outrageous side and the two main characters are eccentric and reluctant heroes placed in front of a new, and changing alien menace, thus, Men in Black fans should enjoy themselves with this one.
Why You’ll Like It:
- Government versus aliens Sci-fi comedy.
- Young adult humor with a feel good cast and copious amounts of snark.
- The sort of events that are thrilling punctuated with some humor.
6. R.I.P.D. (2013)
R.I.P.D. tells the story of two police officers who fail to meet their demise and must capture pale souls and make them cross over to the other side. In the coming soon film directed by Robert Schwentke, there is a clear influence with the Men in Black films, a secret agency, a duo of enforcers, and lots of chases after supernatural creatures.
Despite the mixed reception to R.I.P.D., the film has much in common with Men in Black : the relationships between the leading actors, and the characters’ flat delivery of fanciful scenarios. A viewer feels entertained watching shooting, joking and even the supernatural elements from the film.
Why You’ll Like It:
- Incorrect partner duo under supernatural theme.
- B rocks incorporating many fight scenes with a lot of humor.
- Exciting concept visuals and an alien story arc are part of the picture.
7. Mars Attacks! (1996)
Mars Attacks! By Tim Burton represents an Alien movie parody with an A-class cast, Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, and Pierce Brosnan. It tells the story of a bunch of Martians bringing their invasion to Earth which, of course, ends in catastrophe. It can be a good sci-fi comedy because of the exaggerated look on the aliens and the comedy that is used in camp manner.
Lovers of Men in Black will enjoy the movie because it has nature, absurdity, and wit all rolled into one. , whereas the tone of the humor in Mars Attacks! is even more off-beat, still, both films are very close to Men in Black in their base sense of comedy – they mock humanity’s reactions to the existence of aliens.
Why You’ll Like It:
- An alien invasion comedy and parodies movie experience.
- A more cartoonish kind of aesthetic featuring bright lights and silly main characters.
- A incoherent blend of comedy, action and several exaggerated situations.
8. Galaxy Quest (1999)
In most surveys Galaxy quest is considered one of the best parodies of science fiction television shows, in which a television space drama’s cast is kidnapped by space aliens who believe the actors are their new protectors. This science fiction comedy film is directed by Dean Parisot and its cast list contains such actors as Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman; the movie is determined to make fun of templates typical for science fiction, and at the same time gives the viewers a warm and comic story.
It is more of a spoof though combining action comedy and a rather peculiar team of protagonists, Galaxy Quest should suit fans of Men in Black. Not only can people find a lot of positive emotions for love for the sci-fi genre, sprinkled with of sharp humor, but the film is both hilarious and immensely likable.

- A unique comic sci-fi spoof with a great deal of sincerity.
